There are gatherers and there are hunters.
When it comes to searching for the right business, people who are gatherers start their search for a business by pre-determining exactly what they are looking for. They choose an industry, or a category or a specific business type based on something they have seen, or read about or simply feel comfortable with, and then they go gather up only those options that fall within their narrow boundaries. Their search is abbreviated because what they are looking for is easy to find. Sandwich shops are sandwich shops after all. They identify the best one for them and they commit. Options outside of their search criteria go unnoticed.
Hunters hunt. They are motivated by a need within them that drives them: a dream, a desire, a goal or an end result that is unique to them. They are not sure exactly how to describe the business they are looking for or where they will find it. They are willing to range beyond what they know and look for opportunities that although unfamiliar will get them to their desired destination. Hunters are less certain of where they will end up but more certain of why they are hunting and why their search matters. When they find it they will know.
How will you conduct your search for the right business? Are you a hunter or a gatherer?
